Abstraction is the purist form of aesthetic expression. It strips away the personal and cultural bias that is present in the representational. This allows the artist and the viewer to observe and assess the aesthetic qualities unencumbered by extraneous information.
The goal of all of the work is to use non-subjective visual experiences to invoke a pleasurable emotional reaction to those who look at them.
All the works combine three major aspects of the visual world, physical surface, texture and pattern and color in a sympathetic way, where they interact to enhance the interest, the unity and the clarity of the overall experience.
For over 40 years I’ve been teaching in the areas of two- and three-dimensional aesthetics. Those classes and two subsequent books dealt with recognizing the major visual features and ways for analyzing and adjusting groups of them toward a more pleasing experience.
During my time teaching I was carrying out research focusing on the basic visual cues that humans recognize and methods for assessing and adjusting groups of them toward a higher degree of beauty. Those cues are three-dimensional line, plane and volumes defined by those two attributes and color, physical and visual line, shape, texture, pattern and gloss seen on surfaces.
